Franco Acker Bilk's brother Bill Bilk was running a "Drinking Club" in Greek Street just above Lucio's "Pit Stop" Club opposite "Le Kilt". Jazz was played almost non-stop as one can imagine. I don't remember seeing Acker at "Les Enfants" maybe because, while he was there, I could have been in the Pub on the corner as they had a good pint of "Flower's Bitter" and nice hot sausages on the hot cabinet on the bar. Health and Safety hadn't been invented then, thanks God !

jon "Stranger on the Shore" was a perfect tune fora perfect TV program (1961), un au pair,sad on a beach in an English seaside town. Just hearing the record is so redolent of that far off time. Now all she wouldneed to do is hop on the Eurostar!
Trivia:I seem to remember that Acker had part of his little finger missing.

Roy Deverell Alan wanted to get into films and but the film union ran a closed shop. The Catch-22 was you couldn't get a job without being in the union and you couldn't get into the union without having a job. Alan's stepfather, Gigi asked me how Alan could get into the union. When I explained the situation he said he would just give them some money. I said that might work in Italy but not here in England.But, a few weeks later, Alan had his union ticket! That was an education for me.

Adrian Sorry, but must correct the misrepresentation of the closed-shop. Yes, you had to belong to the union in order to work in the industry but not being a member did not stop you applying for and obtaining work - but it was a condition that you then join the union. Particularly in an extremely risky business such as the film industry where workers were not only subject to the whims of their employers and risked not being payed at all, the closed shop helped protect the workers from the worst extremes.

Roy Deverell No employer was free to take on a non-union member if a union member was available. One loophole was the laboratories where there was a shortage of staff and they were obliged to get you ACTT membership after 3 months or so (which was my way in).The ACTT was run by Yahoos who crippled creativity. They made unreasonable demands on minimum crewing and made low-budget production virtually impossible. Don't get me going.

Adrian We so obviously have different points of view as to whether protecting the interests of the member ship was a "good thing" or not. As a weapon to fight the employers' continued attempts to get "cheap" labour I thought it was. And one can never discuss the merits of this or that person's creativity - solidarity in the face of rapinous employers must surely be applauded just as obstructionism is to be abhorred no matter who the guilty party may be.

I think they had a son, but divorced one or two years later, probably in 1970. Great friend with Gianni Terrusi, good friend of mine, manager with Alfio at the Bistingos of Ernest Corret, and Paul Corret. Earlier waiter (1965) atLa Capannina (Soho square).

jon friend Yes Adrian. It happenednear Liverpool in late May 1968 in the middle of " Les Evenments". Shehad hitched hiked a ride in lorry , a miniswerved in front at and she sufferedwhip lash. Taking her body home was a difficult due to thegeneral strike in France and as far as I can recall J-C was instrumental in arranging all the necessary papers & transport back to Lyons. At the time she lived in Belsize Park Road in the same house as Christian.I remember stopping by the house with my father to extend my condolences. To lase a friend when one is 20 was surreal, not sure even to this day that Irealized what death meant at thatyoung age.

Roy Deverell Bernard was bald, older and seemingly wiser than most of us. He was a regular of Les Enfants and the other great venue of the 50's and early 60's that nobody seems to remember, the St Germain club in Poland Street (next door to the pub). Bernard and an Indian doctor friend of his both got 5 years for performing illegal abortions.

Chris St Germain in Poland St was our main club to meet up with friends. Knew all the regulars and went to Les Enfants etc as a change, but St Germain and pubabove were our favourites. The name Bernard and being older, rings a bell, but we were there 63 - 66 era, so not sure whether it is the right person I am thinking of.

Roy Deverell Bobby played centre half for Fulham. His rôle was to stop the opposing centre forward from getting in sight of goal. I saw him spend an entire match hanging on to Jimmy Greaves's shirt and on another occasion he stuck so close to Spurs centre forward Bobby Smith that one reviewer dubbed him 'Keetch the Leech'. He was a regular and good friends with Paul the restauranteur and another friend of mine, Roger Hooker.

Paolo Onofri Gianni was a real dancer and always at les Enfent with our friend Giuliano Ruocco bartender at La Terrazza. We were also together in Bermuda. By the way Giuliano died five years ago in Bankok Thailand. He hadinherited a fortune from his uncle (he also made a great deal of money, as part owner ofthe Little Venice restaurant in Bermuda). I Gianni and Giuliano in 1966 in the pub next to les Enfent, we saw the italian national soccer team losing against the team of North Korea, and eliminated. In the end England won the cup beating West Germany. Palumbo show up!!

jon f Je me souviens bien de ce taxi jaune gare devant Le Kilt en panne a cause de l’ humidite un soir de brouillard en 1968/9. J-C n’etait pas de bonne humeure . Il m’a hurle pour n’importe quelle raison et plus tard ce soir la m’a refuse l’entrée au Kilti!!! Comme c’est drole de se rappler de ces petites choses de jadis. A cette époque j’avais une 1957 Morris Minor qui ne pouvais pas rouler plus que 80 km a l’heure en decendent la colline de Belsize Park.

J' avais été contacté il y a quelque temps par Martine CRANCE ( ancienne amie de Pierre OBERSON) pour essayer de retrouver la bande du 9 Ladbroke square ( Pierre Richard, Pierre Oberson, toi même, etc...) C'est ainsi que j ai fini par tomber sur ce site génial des "Enfants terribles" . Quelle superbe époque. Finalement, nous faisions parti du Swinging London, sans s en rendre compte.
En ce qui me concerne, après London, je suis parti en Italie à Milan, puis retourné en France ou je me suis marié ( père de deux enfants et grand père de deux petites filles). J ai monté une boite de transport sur l aéroport de Roissy durant 18 ans….. puis hélas …. faillite. Je suis donc parti en Espagne où vivait un de mes frères et où je vis depuis 18 ans. Maintenant à la retraite, je vais repartir m'installer en Bretagne à la fin de l'année. Je sais que Martine CRANCE va essayer de joindre Pierre OBERSON, mais avez vous des nouvelles de Pierre RICHARD ??? J espère que nous aurons tous l occasion de ne retrouver soit en Angleterre, soit en France. A bientôt . Si Marie Christine ORTU me lit, cela me ferai plaisir d avoir de ses nouvelles. I think it closing moved us to LET in the first place! Rather distinguished, he did some work for Lord John boutique on the corner of Wardour st. an Old Compton st.(i think) All my English clothes were from Lord John and Paul's in Carnaby st.
I had a bunch of very tight jumpers, once i had the bright idea to wash them in a public cleaner place, i could not wear them anymore they shrinked half the original siza.
Athos, Fabio, Gianni etc.. would remember. Tragic moments...., lot of money invested in those clothes.

Paolo onori In the slow nights Lucio and I had great conversation just about anything, we have been friends for years, until I went to Bermuda in 1971, i wanted a place with no casinos, he then went to Teneriffe, he was older than me but somehow we liked each other to the extend i never paid to go downstairs.I felt sad to know that Lucio was not there any longer, and when his brother told me he diedi was shocked.
Lucio in his venitian way, like a Goldoni characterwas a personage to me, an icon of my youth.
Everytime I go to London before and after the removing of that area, I feel very sad not see Les Enfent or at least what was left of it, some kind of a Blue room?? sorry to say an awful dark place closed most of the times, really negletted. Lucio made a tiny place a big place of all of us kids that spent so much time.Good old Lucio farewell and from upthere keep an eye on us all your faithfull friends.

Roy Devrell Marcelle was the sole waitress when I first frequented Les Enfants in the late 50's. She was very exotic, from Martinique and an incredible dancer. On the rare occasions she and her dance partner, Théo, took to the floor downstairs, everyone would stop to watch them.

Priscilla christophersen We have been friends since school, discovering LET in the 60's, I think someone gave us a free pass in the street as until then we would go to St Moritz the Swiss Club. We loved the place from day one, good times were spent at Les Enfants and although Marie and I both left the UK in 69 whenever we get together the subject of our time in Soho and LET always comes up, great times indeed! I know there is plenty more she can add.

As for le kilt one evening we all went (may be 6 of us) with louis Brown at his place and we had an excellent Dom Perignon 1959. Robert was a friend and a real nice guy, from Nice my preferred summer place, he spoke some fairly good italian iand i spoke some sort of good french.
Once we were at a party together at his flat (he lived with his home friend Alan the son of a very wealthy french father, the only person in London i ever seen, to own a colour tv set).
Roberthad a great mini that night we switched cars and i took his Mini Cooper to go home with Susan after the party, i only had one or two gin and tonic (no ice) It was about 3am, from his flat in Belgravia to my flat in Victoria i drove like a maniac, after a while a Police blackJaguar was after me, i did nor realize it,there was no traffic and driving a Mini was amazing, so i passed a few red lights, theni saw the police and tried to lose them speeding, but soon i came to my good sense i stopped i went to the officer offering my wrists for handcuffs, with my great surprise he saluted me and asked me (while i was taking the breathlizer) why was i so foolish, I did not know what to say but said the first thing that came to my mind:
"officer you may not believe this but i was trying to impress (show off), Susan,"
the officer moved to the door of the mini opened it and asked Susan:
"Susan are you impressed now??"
My alcohol test was just below the limit, he said "leave the car here and go home",
I almost fainted, i was so worried about Robert, he pleaded with me to be careful and here i was close to be arrested with his car. This is not the first time i had the pleasure to see the generosity of a great London cop. Another time opposite les Enfent,.......... but that was a different story.

His name was Franco, and we used hang around after the dealer school hours.
I think he married Linda then after finishing the Groupier school at the Charlie Chester they went to Bahamas sent to work in a casino there by Paolo and Cellini.
